National security at stake due to purchase of old aircraft:BJP

New Delhi, Mar 1 (PTI) A demand for disclosing the names of ministers and officials involved in procurement of six phased-out aircraft from the US for Indian Navy was made in the Rajya Sabha today through a Special Mention.
These 35-40 year old helicopters were procured at a cost of Rs 182.14 crore when they "were on the verge of completing their air frame life," Tarun Vijay (BJP) said.
"The procurements were made putting national security at stake...the aircraft were meant for training to cadets putting their lives at risk too," he said demanding immediate disclosure of the names of the persons involved in the deal.
These helicopters were delivered with many defects resulting in their non-availability leading to delay in training and operationalisation of the squadrons, Vijay said, adding the Defence Ministry has already received a rap from CAG on it.
